2009 Physician Assistant Salary Report
Data has been compiled for this year’s salary report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics and from the 2009 AAPA Annual Census. The BLS calculates estimates with data collected from employers in all industry sectors. AAPA census data is used to calculate summery statistics to describe the salaries of survey respondents. These figures are not an attempt to estimate the true salary range of physician assistants (PAs) in each area, setting and specialty, but rather are provided to summarize the salaries of participants in the annual census for informational purposes. Salaries from AAPA data are presented where at least 10 respondents in a given region, division or state represented the specified organization type, practice setting, specialty or years of experience category.
In the past, we created customized reports for each request and were only able to accommodate requests where the sample size was available. In this report, we have included information on all specialties in each state where there is a sufficient sample size. In addition, we have grouped states for analysis by census division and census region in order to provide information on specialties where the sample was inadequate by state. Also, this report lists salary information by practice setting, organization type (including self-employed PAs), and years of experience (where sample size allows).
The tables in this report provide information on the mean salaries in selected categories, as well as the 10th, 25th, 50th (median), 75th, and 90th percentiles. In each percentile, the designated percent of PAs make less than the salary amount (e.g. for the 25th percentile, 25 percent of PAs make less than the named salary amount).
In addition, the report has a section on national results for salaries and fringe benefits, including results for part-time PAs. Unless otherwise specified, all tables in this report include information about PAs who work at least 32 hours a week for their primary employer and are not self-employed.
