Cover the Uninsured Week 2010 – March 14th to the 20th:

The purpose of Cover the Uninsured Week is to raise awareness of the 46 million Americans living without insurance.  Here are some great ways to promote awareness with your student society:

  1. Partner with a hospital or a community center to sponsor an enrollment fair.  Here screening services can be offered and the community can be educated regarding their choices for free or low cost health care.
  2. Organize a health care forum-  This will allow you to invite key speakers from your community who are passionate about health care coverage and reform.  If media are invited it will highlight the needs within your community and will create the first step to reform, recognition of the problem at hand.
  3. Distribute information regarding coverage.

Information, planning guides, and flyers can all be found on the Cover the Uninsured website at: www.CoverTheUninsured.org

We challenge all PA students to become involved to assist in providing coverage to all Americans!

2nd Annual Student Academy Service Month!

The second annual Student Academy Service project will occur again during the month of April. We are asking each program to reach out to an aspect of their community in need. Populations the Student Academy assisted last year include elderly, uninsured, inner city school-aged children, and the homeless. PA students have participated in various activities such as bingo events for the elderly, health fairs, blood pressure screenings, and volunteering in soup kitchens. Now we are asking you to become involved in your own individual community. Following the event, we want you to show off your service and get some recognition for all your hard work! Write up a short paragraph of the event and send pictures to me (or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) to post on the Web site. AAPA Annual Conference!

The 38th annual conference is fast approaching! With the annual conference comes the annual Host City Prevention Campaign which benefits a health care organization working in underserviced and impoverished areas. This year the recipient will be the South Georgia Farmworker Health Project. This year’s theme is once again literacy, therefore we are asking all programs to get involved.

The HCPC also encompasses the 5K Fun Walk/Run which is held annually at the annual conference and the book drive. If you are unable to attend the 5K fun walk/ run, don’t worry! There are still two other ways your society can contribute to the HCPC.  Students may decide to make a monetary donation or simply ship books to organizers at the annual conference.  The donation site for the book drive has not yet been selected.  However, I would still like to encourage students to collect gently used or new books for school aged children.  Books will be mailed right to the conference site in Atlanta, further information can be found online here.  Student societies will be recognized during the AOR with a certificate for all of their hard work in supporting the HCPC whether they directly donate books or make a monetary donation.

Respectfully yours,
