NYIT
PA Student Society is actively involved in the effort to promote childhood
literacy. On
May 19, 2008, Janey Quinn and Erika Gordon went to the pediatric walk-in
clinic at Schneider Children's Hospital of LIJMC in New Hyde Park
for two hours with 100 books to help benefit the Nationwide Reach
Out and Read Program. The average patient population attending the
clinic consists of, but not limited to, many adolescent mothers, non-English
speaking parents with bilingual children, and low income families.

On
May 21, 2008, students from the NYIT PA Student Society visited the
Great Neck Road Elementary School in Copiague, NY where they launched
their biggest philanthropic effort yet. The school houses grades K-5
and a disability classroom for children of all ages. The event involved
the entire school, 470 students, and lasted about two hours. Ten students
from the NYIT PA Program helped to distribute all of the books. The
majority of the school’s population often has limited access to books
and reading materials due to the lower socioeconomic status that surrounds
them. Despite this, they were all filled with enthusiasm and greeted
the volunteers with huge smiles when presented with their very own
books.

NOVA
University - Naples
Thanks
to director of external affairs, Walda Lora, Nova-Naples students
were able to promote the PA profession after an appearance on the
local TV show, “Your Community.” The show, hosted by Henry Cancel
and co-host Jennifer Brooks, provides
the public with information about events, activities, programs, organizations,
and businesses that have an impact on the community. Through this
medium, students were able to increase
the public's awareness about PAs, educate the local community about
their scope of practice, and address questions and concerns as it
relates to PA program enrollment.

Nova
Southeastern University - Naples
The
Sean P. Grimes Student Society at Nova-Naples has been really active
all throughout the months of October through December on various community
projects. For example, they had a Thanksgiving charity where they
adopted several families and provided a full Thanksgiving hot
meal including a turkey as well as stocking their pantry with groceries.
In December, the society adopted over 100 kids and granted them their
wishes for the holidays. They were able to get the participation of
practicing PAs in the community and overall donated well over $2,000
in clothes, educational toys, books, diapers, and other needs.
The society has
had a cultural diversity luncheon to celebrate and acknowledge the plethora
of cultures within our class, and had over 20 different dishes from
various countries. For PA week the student society alone raised over
$3,000 and donated it to the American Cancer Society along with having
over 50 students participate in their walk. Following the walk we had
a blood drive where we collected 25 units of blood surpassing the intended
goal of 15 units.
